Getting clients

How to get more clients when you do not have a sales team.

A practical order of work for owners of small businesses: start with the clients you already have, pick the right prospects, reach out directly with follow-up, and let AI take the repetitive dialling off your plate.

Start with the clients you already have

The fastest new client is usually one an existing client sends you. Referrals arrive already trusting you, so they close quickly and cost almost nothing in cash. Ask every happy client, at the moment they are happiest, for one introduction by name. Make it easy: a two-line message they can forward, and a thank-you that matters to them.

Next, go back to people who nearly bought: old quotes, lapsed customers and enquiries that went quiet. They know you already. A short, specific message or call (“we quoted for your kitchen refit in March, is it still on the list?”) often revives more work than a new campaign.

Decide exactly who you want

Outreach fails most often because the list is wrong, not because the message is. Write down the three or four things your best clients have in common: type of business, size, location, the problem that made them buy. Then build a list of businesses that match, with a named person and a working phone number where you can find one. A list of 200 right-fit businesses beats 5,000 random ones.

Our guide on how to build a UK calling list walks through doing this lawfully.

Reach out directly, and follow up

Direct outreach, by phone, email or LinkedIn, is how most small businesses create new clients on demand rather than waiting. The numbers are modest but reliable when the list is good: industry benchmarks put live conversations at between one in ten and one in six dials and suggest it takes around eight attempts to reach a busy decision maker, which is why follow-up matters more than the first call.

A realistic first target is a short conversation and a reason to talk again, not a sale on the first call. See what your first calling campaign should aim for and a simple follow-up sequence.

Let AI do the repetitive part

The slow, draining part of outreach is dialling, leaving voicemails and chasing people who are never at their desk. AI calling agents such as FoxEra Calls do that part: they phone your list during the hours you choose, introduce your business, answer basic questions and log every conversation, so you spend your time only on the people who want to talk. It costs from 12p per connected minute with no subscription, and every new account gets £7 of free calling credit.

You can now hand this work to the AI assistant you already use. FoxEra Calls connects to ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and other AI agents, so you can say “add these 30 dentists and have Cass call them tomorrow at 10” and it builds the campaign, shows you exactly how many people will be phoned and waits for your yes. See how to connect your AI assistant.

Make it easy to find you

Alongside outreach, make sure people who already need you can find and trust you: a clear website that says who you help and what it costs, a complete Google Business Profile, a handful of recent reviews, and useful answers to the questions your customers actually ask. This takes longer to pay off than outreach, but it compounds.

Stay on the right side of the rules

In the UK, marketing calls must be screened against the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) and the Corporate TPS unless the person has agreed to hear from you, and you must say who you are and respect anyone who asks you to stop. Marketing emails to limited companies do not need prior consent, but emails to sole traders and some partnerships usually do. The ICO guidance on direct marketing is the authority; read our plain-English summary in is cold calling legal in the UK.

Frequently asked questions

What is the quickest way to get new clients?

Ask existing happy clients for introductions and contact past enquiries and old quotes first; they already know you. For new prospects, direct outreach by phone or email to a well-chosen list produces conversations within days, and AI calling can handle the dialling.

How many calls does it take to get a client?

It depends on your list and offer. Industry benchmarks suggest between 1 in 10 and 1 in 6 dials reaches a live conversation and roughly 2 to 3 meetings come from every 100 dials, with around 8 attempts needed to reach a busy prospect.

Can I get clients without a sales team?

Yes. Referrals, a clear website and profile, and automated outreach let a business owner generate conversations without hiring. AI calling agents such as FoxEra Calls make the calls and log the results, so you only speak to interested prospects.

Can ChatGPT help me get clients?

Yes. Beyond writing messages, you can connect ChatGPT or Claude to FoxEra Calls so the assistant builds your calling campaign, shows you how many people will be phoned and, after your approval, runs it and reports back.
